I'm thinking about getting Windows 8 after Christmas, for the gaming boost of FPS and performance in BF4 and other games, and just to keep up with the technology. I have a decent computer, i7 3770k, GTX 650 Ti OC, but that doesn't matter. I'm looking to see if I would be able to keep everything that is on my computer at the moment. As in bookwork and games. I don't want a fresh PC, I'm not too sure so I came to you guys, thankyou :)

Solution

That's an amd radeon r9 280x which is the new line up of cards made by amd to replace the 7000 series. If you didn't already know, there are two major gpu makers out there namely NVidia and amd. AMD is known for their good price/performance ratios that exceed that of NVidia. The next closest competitor to the 280x is the gtx 770, but that's over...

With that amount of cash, why spend it on windows 8, heres an xfx r9 280x for $359 at ple computers
http://
It is currently out of stock but the supplier says they should get some tomorrow

Now that would give you a huge boost on performance over your 650ti and paired with that beasty i7, you will be cracking ultra on bf4 no problem

What psu do you have?, give the exact make and model, what os are you currently running?, and how much of ram do you have?

Never heard of that graphics card, I'm only familiar with NVIDIA range. And I'm on Windows 7 64 bit. I have 8gb ram and I'm not sure what psu I have dude. Dunno how to check or find out :/ Got built at a local PC shop. I'd like to know if this graphics card is going to go good with other games, that go well with nvidia. and What if I don't get that much money? what other cards are there?

AMD is known for their good price/performance ratios that exceed that of NVidia. The next closest competitor to the 280x is the gtx 770, but that's over $400 and the 280x is still faster, so as you can see price/performance, amd wins. AMD has recently launched a new api called mantle which is said to improve gaming performance, but this is exclusively available to the amd 7000 and their recently launched series.

You should definitely check up on that psu. Open your case door, the one on the side, and check the brand and model of that psu. The psu should be located at the top or bottom of your case

If you don't have the budget, heres a r9 270 for $229, http://, which is still faster than your 650ti

There is really nothing wrong with going AMD as they offer good bang for the buck

Cooler master don't generally make good psu's and the one you have is more for home/office use and not for gaming. I would recommend a 550W 80+ certified psu for the r9 280x. A good psu would be an xfx 550W core edition or corsair cx600 or any psu made by seasonic as they are the best brands around

The cheapest and most reliable I could find was this one from cpl
http://
That should be enough for a single 280x or 270

Ok thanks alot, that is a 520W psu, mine now is 525, or is it because the new one is 80+ bronze standard? I was looking at a corsair one at PCcasegear - http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=15_354&products_id=21713&zenid=e7ee2acb9f86fdec8ed864842e51696b
Or this one - http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=15_972&products_id=13567

What do you think? Thanks alot.

A 5W difference doesn't really matter. You should be concerned about the quality and, yes, 80+ certification is important in choosing a psu. Both those psu's are good and the seasonic is even better, if your budget can allow it

If your budget can allow it, go with the seasonic or else just stick with the corsair and you will be fine

Hey mate, sorry for so late after but what's the best brand in the R9 280x? I know you said XFX but apparently it's dodgy? I don't know, what's the brand you recommend? :)

You can try msi, gigabyte, sapphire or asus, which are all good brands. If you are feeling unsure about the xfx, heres an msi R9 280x, http://, great card and good overclocker

Sorry for late reply, was a bit busy

gday, so I bought my gpu, xfx 280x, and i didn't get a psu cause the guys in PLE said I would be fine. (they tested it) I can play max on all games now, but on bf4, I still struggle to get 120 fps max even on all low graphics. Thanks again, just wondering if I need a new psu or if I should try overclocking my gpu?

First of all, do you have v-sync enabled?, check under your graphic settings and if it is, disable it

Whats your average framerate on max settings and low settings?, use fraps to check

Whats your monitor resolution?

Singleplayer or multiplayer?

Do you have the latest Catalyst drivers installed (not the one that came with the disk) ?

Do you have stability issues, such as crashing, bsod's during long hours of gameplay?, The reason why I asked this is because a 280x recommends a 550 to 600 watt psu

And finally, is your processor overclocked?

By the way the multiplayer aspect of bf4 is very buggy and people do complain of lag, server crashes etc, but that shouldn't be the case with the singleplayer. You should also try updating to the latest version of the game

Please answer those questions and get back to me

Well, Multiplayer,
Max settings - fps = like 40-60
low settings - fps = 80-120 (with config)

Got latest drivers, not sure if catalyst or not.

CPU is not OC. (wouldn't know how)

no BSODs

and 60hz 1920x1080 samsung full led monitor

That looks good, remember that this is bf4 multiplayer and it is a chunk more demanding than your regular singleplayer game. Also they are still suffering with a few performance issues so make sure you have the game patched to the latest version, although it should auto update

If you want more performance, turn down the AA and make sure v-sync is off (remember your monitor is refreshed at 60Hz so if v-sync is on, it will never go above 60fps, but you will get screen tearing, that's normal),and you would get a chunk more fps without sacrificing much on visuals

Make sure you have the latest drivers, that would be 13.12, check in your Catalyst Control Centre which version you have

Also, you should get a boost in performance when bf4 releases the update for mantle which is exclusively for AMD gpu's, luckily you have one :)

How is the singleplayer performance?, average framerates, everything maxed

And one more question, Are those frame rates benchmarked on 64 player servers?

I actually meant, what's the average frame rate when playing the story mode or campaign on max settings?
