4x R9 290 with riser cables

I am making a 4 GPU mining rig.
Currently only plugged in 2 GPU using non-powered riser cables.

Reading online about 4 GPU mining rigs, they all mention to use at least 2 PCI 1x - 16x powered riser cables and 2 non powered ones.

Can someone plz let me know why I need powered risers.
Is the power supply to the GPU (1 6-pin and 1 8-pin) not enough to make it work without the powered risers.

Hardware Spec am using:

1. Mobo: ASRock 990FX Extreme4 (http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/990FX%20Extreme4/)

2. 4x Sapphire Radeon R9 290 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card.

3. PSU: Silverstone Strider Series 1500 Watt (SST-ST1500)

The reason you need powered risers is because with 4 gpus the mobo connector simply cant feed all the pcie slots the 75w it needs which could hurt the mobo.

The power risers are needed for the last two cards


Also mining is basically dead now. The money you spend wont be recovered nearly as quickly as in the last few years

is mining really dead, what about mining altcoins and using an auto switching pool that automatically trades the altcoins for bitcoins? it seems like theres still plenty to be earned to me.
