I have a desktop(obviously from my avatar) and a playstation 3. I steam netflix in my room via my PC, and recently ran into a issue the playstation 3 is for my daughters room its her "netflix machine" now we have a bigger TV for the livingroom and i find myself wanting to watch netflix in the living room but theres no way im moving my PC from the desk to the living room just for netflix so we've been using the PS3 in the living room then my daughter is bugging us to watch something in her room, she refuses to watch it in our room where theres a machine that can run it. So i was thinking of getting a steamer I was looking at the Google Chromecast streamer, just wondering if anyone has it or issues with it, or a better one (on the cheaper side is a must).

Please give your opinion about the chromecast or suggest another streamer. I WILL be connecting via HDMI. So it has to be HDMI compatible.

Its great and setup is a breeze. I haven't had a single issue with it. For the price there is no competition its just so easy to use and 35 bucks. I believe you can also get some free stuff with it if you order from Google play

This was the one thing I gifted myself for the holidays, and I'm glad I did.
You really can't beat the $35 price tag, especially for the functionality. They're continually adding features - it's currently slightly limited, depending on what kind of hardware you have to act as the "remote" (eg. Android over iOS).

It's extremely easy to set up, and the quality is very good.
One note - the iOS Netflix app seems to "forget" that you're casting, and sometimes you'll lose the ability to control playback. I use my Kindle Fire instead, and have no issues with that app.

You'll get a free "rental" from the Google Play store upon purchase (at least I did).

As it turns out i read a little more on it and i don't really like the fact i have to have another device to control or to even stream netflix to it(Granted I have 2 android phones, and a PC). I was looking at a Roku HD Media Streamer instead as a stand alone streamer. Its currently $37 at bestbuy. What do you think?

Have no experience with the Roku, personally, though I was looking at it prior to deciding to go with the Chromecast.

How do you currently control your Netflix viewing? With a remote of some kind, yes? The Chromecast uses your iOS/Android device or PC as the remote, so it's really no different. You've gotta browse for your Netflix show somehow :) .
Keep in mind there is no streaming FROM your device, it simply sends the address to the Chromecast which then streams from your Wifi.

I currently use my ps3, or Browser on my PC. Streaming from my phone would be kinda dumb since when i get a phone call, oops the netflix shuts off....Yes i stream with some sort of remote controller or mouse. But Roku is a stand alone streamer that allows you to stream netflix WITHOUT a phone, ps3, pc, tablet ect. Its like a netflix PC per say. Comes with remote also.

And the Chromecast is the same. You're just misunderstanding the role of the device (tablet/phone) in this situation. Remote, that's all it is, does not stream to the Chromecast, merely controls playback.

If you prefer the Roku, awesome. The functionality is the same, the Chromecast just uses your phone/tablet as the remote instead of sending you one. Me, I have too many remotes as it is, so I appreciate being able to use my phone/tablet.

Nice thing? You can shut off your phone after hitting play - or take a call - and the stream is unaffected.

To each their own :)

Wow thats actually pretty cool how gettting a phone call doesn't affect playback. How about playing apps while netflix is running? Say my girlfriend likes 8 Ball pool or what ever it is can she play that game while still streaming netflix?

I've not had any issues using apps while streaming, so I can't imagine your girlfriend would see any issues either.

Whichever you choose, I'm sure it'll suit your needs. Both seem to be solid products.

I have 2 chromecast... simple device, a breeze to setup and easy to use.... i have it in our bedroom and on my main home theater setup. Can stream Pandora and You tube... There are also some other apps as well.

Your phone is just the remote... you can do whatever else you want on your phone while your streaming netflix
