Hi,

I own two Optiplex 745 SFF and was looking to upgrade de CPU to a Q6700. I have seen many threads about it, and many support the CPU for the Optiplex.

Bought the CPU and is not working in any of the PCs. The BIOS has been updated (2.6.6) and I have tried the CPU with both machines without success.

Side note: The first time I installed the CPU the PC gave a 1-3-2 beeping code with the number 1 and 3 lights on (memory problem). I turn off the computer, turn it on again and the OS uploaded completely (check in systems and it recognized the CPU – in UBUNTU).
Turn it off to connect it with the house TV and the beeping started again. Since then, it has not been able to upload in any of the PCs. If I change the CPU to the CPU that came with the PC, E6300, the OS uploads completely.

Any idea of what I'm doing wrong is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

That PC has the Intel Q965 chipset which doesn't support Core 2 Quads natively but may work on SOME machines.

The first chipset to natively support the Core 2 Quad are the Q series chipsets.

Apparently people have Q6600 installed in their systems so maybe resell/return or keep the Q6700 and buy a Q6600?

Well it should work as its 95W.

The only things i can really suggest is put BIOS settings back to default, try a Q6600, upgrade to a newer optiplex, Get a E6700 instead.

Keep in mind the SFF version may be more limited in terms of power and hardware support compared to the mini tower.

Thanks for the answer,

How can I put the BIOS settings to default and how will it work recognizing the CPU? Will it be that with new BIOS settings it was set to not being recognized?

If it doesn't work, may it be a faulty CPU?

I just don't know how it was able to upload the OS once.

If not, I will try your suggestion and go for the Q6600.

It will reset back to default, maybe allowing you to use that Core 2 Quad (just an idea)

You can open the PC, disconnect power cable from the PC, take out the little round battery located on the motherboard and hold the power button for 10 secs then put the battery back in (shiny side facing up/you) and install the new CPU before you turn it on.
