Hey i'm in the process of picking parts for my new build. Would a i5 4670k overclocked to about 4.4gz be better then a stock i7 4770k. I am not going to be editing on this machine just gaming. So i can't take advantage of the i7.

If all you are doing is playing games just go with the I5. An I5 is pretty much an I7 without the hyper threading which really doesn't matter since games don't make use of hyper threading anyway. There isn't much point in paying extra for something you aren't going to be using anyway.

Yes. Do note that not all games will benefit from OCing your CPU. The majority I play (LoL, Amnesia, Crysis 2 & 3, GMod etc) don't see much (2 - 3 FPS) if any improvement at all. The only major one I have seen changes in is a modded Minecraft. I had decent frames(90 - 120 depending where I was. ie next to factory would be 90ish) but would stutter considerably more when the OC was not in place, but turning on multicore in optifine helped a lot more than the OC did. I have a 3570K btw.

If not editing and only gaming, you are right to go with the 4670K OC'ed, but think of overclocking as more of a fun/bragging rights kind of thing for now. There will be a time when you really will need to OC to keep up with games though, but that time is not now so a stock chip would run great.

go with i7. oc'd i5 can't get same framerate as stock i7 in crysis 3 and some other games. hyper-threading helps in games and it will help even more, coz new engines can utilize 4+ cores. Battlefield 4 can utilize more than 4 cores. If u go with oc'd i5 it will be, basically, stock i7 or a bit worse depending on game. So what is the point for upgrading to i5 when it will be bottlenecking mostly all new games? If u want to upgrade every year - go with i5. If u want to build a solid machine - go with i7 and oc it to 4.5Ghz. It will last for 2-3 years for sure.

It's fun to read that game don't use hyperthreading. If games can utilize ONLY 4 cores ofc u don't get benefit from ht. But if u go with i3(2core,4threads) and turn off ht in battlefield 3 u will get 40% lower framerate. Again, if new engine can utilize 4+ cores IT WILL get benefit from ht in this game. Newcome games will mostly all support 4+ cores. I wanted to get i5 too some time ago, when oc'd i5 could deliver u good framerates in ALL games. Now oc'd i5 can run heavy cpu games around 60-70fps, not 100+ like it was when sb 2500k first appears. If u dont want to have problems with performance in multiplayer and heavy cpu single player games - go with i7.
/e u already can see it, coz 8 core amd delivers same performance as i5 in new titles(now games can use 4+ cores). go with i7.

I think it will take a while before most games become massively multithreaded. At the moment, there are few games that actually do use more than four cores (FSX, BF3/4) and games like BF3/4 are definitely more GPU intensive than the are CPU intensive. I would not worry about CPU upgrades for a while with the 4670K, and rather get a new GPU later down the track for this reason.

The 4670K would be good for the next 2-3 years as well.

All you have to do is look at benchmarks. Benchmarks show that most games do not make use of hyper threading right now. In some games having hyper threading enabled even hurt performance. As for the rest of what you said that is a bunch of crap. I have an I5 2500k and I get great frame rates in games. Most games are more GPU intensive than CPU intensive and the frame rates you get depend more on the GPU you are using than the CPU.

I never said they don't use it, I simply said not much benefit in regards to the 4670K vs 4770K, with the way games are going. They are very much likely to be more heavily demanding of the GPU over the CPU.

Thanks i will just go with a i5 no need to pay extra for a i7.
