I write this with disappointing and stunned mind as my not so long ago bought thermaltake toughpower XT 775 just malfunctioned out of the blue . Upon a simple booting up, the pc would not start, then i unplugged the power cable, and switched on the PSU switch, there was a short band and smoked came out of the PSU ! I was literary stunned, couldnt believe my eyes, this might happen with such a expensive unit. Now if i plug the power to the unit, the standby light turns on , also the motherboard standby light turns on, but pc dosent start , it just dead silent. Although the usb ports gets the power i believe. Now i can predict the 12v line suffered the damage and i opened the unit to find if there is any burned parts , but couldnt locate so far.
Now i was wondering, what might get wrong here ? the psu lights up its standby light, so it is not entirely dead, right ? is there good chances it can be repaired again ? please someone who knows PSU better, could help me out with it , i really appreciate your help

Things do break you can't pay to have something never fail, all things have a failure rate. If you want to try for an awesome supply again I suggest a Seasonic platinum rated power supply, but any 80+ Gold supply should be solid enough to last for many years, hell the bronze ones from reputable companies should too.

I know you're in asia so this isn't an option to buy from here but I've had 5 of these in service and never had an issue out of them either so far

I'm not sure, but if it malfunctioned there is a high chance you will have to buy a new one.. It's tech stuff, even the most quality components can turn bad, unfortunately :/

I would suspect there was damage one of the rails as well, they dont' always leave burned spots, but typically with some there would be a capacitor that would look "funny" maybe not black. I wouldn't bother trying to repair it but if it is "not so long ago bought" then it should still be under warranty and maybe you can RMA it back to thermaltake

If the Thermaltake Toughpower XT 775W (TPX-775M) is still within its 5 Year Warranty then initiate an RMA with Thermaltake.

The +5Vsb (i.e. +5V Standby) circuit is actually a separate linear power supply on the PSU's main circuit board. The +5Vsb is what powers the motherboard standby LED. This circuit is always powered on when the PSU's power switch is in the ON position and receiving AC power.

There must be a failure of a component in the main switch mode power circuit. It could be a failed switching transistor or electrolytic capacitor or both.

thankz i appreciate the quick response, i too believe it isn't worth repairing and i completely lost my faith on this company, my pc total load is below 500 watt and it is marked 775w ! with All the protection know to PSU makers !!!! That is entirely a joke ! I would rather buy a corsair maybe . what worse, when i see generic units last for years after years, even under overloading , how come a $180 unit died after a year !

Unfortunately im from an far east asia and the unit was bought from aborad, and i lost the papers :( i dont know if i still can claim warranty ? and since i opened the case after it exploded, its void anyway :(

I have a Corsair HX-1000W which cost over $300 when I bought it several years ago. It's a very good PSU both in design and quality. It made a bang one day after I had it for about 2 or so years, I didn't see any smoke but I could smell something burnt. I had it RMA'd since it had a 5 year warranty. Other than that one failure, I had absolutely no problems before or since.
Anything can fail, no matter how good of a design or quality it is. So don't think that paying any amount of money will protect you from failures.

you are right, nothing is foolproof, i dont know if it helps to determine the cause of the failure of the unit, i actually forgot to say, a data cable was connected to my mobo and it was a faulty cable that i forgot to replace and had wires shorted, somebody (or may be me ) connected it within the usb3 believing its the working one to charge my phone. I however got a 450 watt psu running my pc now and since i was having random restarts and found out the faulty cable connected to the usb is the reason , got rid of it, now pc is running normally.
I will take the unit to some local guy , repairmen and something tells me , any protection circuit might blown off, may be some swithing transistors which i believe i could locate . I will keep posting if this unit could be revive to life ... i again thank you all for sharing your views and stroy .
