Hello, I pretty much know nothing about HARDWARE, and more of a software geek, and I need some help please.

Where can I learn more about RAM: What is Pins, Mhz in RAM? Can I use any?

I have a Desktop Computer, which has 1gb RAM.
Here is the Image.

Image of the RAM taken out.

PLEASE SEE THIS ALBUM For images!!

So after going to CEX, which RAM do I buy? which image one, how do I know which RAM will work on my machince?
What exactly is 240 pin?
How do I know if my computer will take DDR2 OR DDR3? THANKS
From the CEX Image should I buy FOUR 1GB sticks @ £3 Each? thanks!

Thank You very much and please help me, and out me out of my misery :D :)

Google a hardware utility that will show you exactly what RAM you are using and what speed it is running at. If you Google your motherboard specs (the model number is usually stenciled on the motherboard itself or the hardware utility will tell you what you have), the motherboard determines what RAM you can use.

This product is good (and free):
http://www.piriform.com/speccy

Or go to this page and download either Hardware Monitor or PC Wizard:

http://www.cpuid.com/

Any of these free programs will tell you what make and model your motherboard is and what RAM you are using. Then buy more of the same type and speed.

You currently have DDR2 in your PC, so that is most likely to work. DDR3 actually has a different pin configuration (pins are the golden contacts on the RAM) which means it won't fit in a DDR2 slot, but some motherboards have both slots for DDR2 and 3. Can you tell us your motherboard model and CPU so we can confirm if your motherboard and CPU supports DDR3?

Done please see updated album

HOW, exactly can I ask how do you know that Its DDR2? is that good or bad?

How did you know its a DDR2 machine? can you point it out please

Thanks

Yes, on the 3rd and 4th CPUID images in your album, under both the "Memory" tab and the "SPD" tab, they both say "DDR2". The speed is given as "PC2-5300", which is what you'd look for if you wanted to add to it or replace it with larger memory modules. The "PC2" part identifies it as DDR2. If it was DDR3 then the designation would begin with "PC3...".

Hello, Thank you all for your help and advice!

2 more quick questions:

1) Could I buy 4 of these and stick them in? will they work?
https://uk.webuy.com/product.php?sku=SMEMM8DH34

2)

Whats the difference in :

1 GB PC5300 / DDR2 667 240 Pin Memory
2 GB PC6400 / DDR2 800 240 Pin Memory

What does the 667 and 800 Represent?

I now sort of understand the 240 pins, and DDR, just only the 667 and 800, is abit confusing

Thanks very much

As long as it is the same type of RAM, such as DDR2, a faster RAM will work even if the motherboard or processor will access it at the slower speed. So lets say your motherboard and processor access memory at 667 MHz. You can put faster RAM in, such as 800 MHz, but it will still be accessed at the slower speed. In this example you would be paying for faster memory but not using it at the faster speed.
