I'm currently testing various parts on my PC, and would like to do the following, however want to check that it's safe to do so first.

I want to power everything except from the GPU using one power supply, and then connecting just the GPU to the second power supply. Then I'm going to start them both using the paperclip method.....

Will this work and is it safe to do so? It won't be a permanent situation, just temporary whilst I run some tests..

Not the safest thing in the world but no reason it can't work.

It's not a good idea to run a setup like that.
