Hello,

I'm a senior in high school and looking to pursue a job in in IT in either business or education. I'm wondering what the ideal college major would be for a career in this field. I love computer hardware and networking if that paints a better picture. Right now I'm considering Computer Engineering but wondering if that's too specific to a small area of focus. However, I'm afraid an It major is too broad of a field.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Would agree that Computer Science is probably your best bet, but it really depends what kind of IT you want to do. Are you thinking of a kind of technical support type environment? Or are you more interested in being a network specialist or something? I would definitely say at this stage you should study something like Computer Science or similar, which has many different sub categories - rather than picking something so specific.

Alternatively, do what I did! After school I decided not to go to Uni (long story, wanted to move away so got a job to save money), I managed to get a job as a Junior Computer Technician, which mostly just involved repair and refurbishment of old machines, as well as wiping old HDD's. Through that I learned a lot about PC's, Laptops, and Servers and the knowledge I gained helped me to get an IT Support job at a Retail Company after 5 months. I worked in my support job for a couple of years before being headhunted for the job I now have for an IT Company.

The point really is that a degree is a pretty standard thing to have now which means competition is fierce what you really want to get is experience. Whether you get that whilst your studying, before you study, or instead of studying, doesn't really matter. But it will help you loads.

And you never know, you might change your mind about what you want to do (which is why you shouldn't pick a really specialised degree). When i left school I thought I wanted to do Software Development and though now I still enjoy doing a bit of development work, I couldn't imagine myself not being in a Support role.

Hope that helps you a bit!
