windows 7 won't connect to internet even though shows internet access

Desktop is connected via ethernet, computer shows internet access, but will not connect. Ethernet is good, router rebooted, I get a good "ping" in a dos command.Help!

Is your homepage valid? What are you pinging? What is your ip address?

I watched a YouTube video where they wanted to check the internet connection all seemed good according to the results. What do you mean is my homepage valid? Its Google and it comes up when you open chrome but when you search anything the web page is unavailable.

Sometimes malware can change your home page to something that does not exist. So you can get to google but no further? How about another browser.

Yes. When I click chrome the google search page comes up. I type in different things and says This webpage not available. Ie doesnt work either.

Mrs parsley do this :

Go into command prompt. If you don't know where that is, go to start and in search or run type command.

Once you go into command prompt

type the following...

Ipconfig/release

Ipconfig/renew

Try connecting again after this

What if you change you homepage to say msn...will it get there taking the search function out of the picture. Google may be cached in both browsers. Just a shot in the dark.

When did this happen? You may want to try a system restore. Programs accessories system tools system restore. Put it back to a date that it was working. You may need to check show more restore points.

I had already done the restore before I came here. The ipconfig says media disconnected. That's what I'm going to look into next, bb ut it won't be til this evening.
