I just built a new pc and after assembling it it works just as well as when the parts were in separate boxes. there is absolutely no response when I try to turn it on. I know the psu switch is on and I am relatively sure the cables are all secure.

Is there a cable I may have forgotten to plug in or something else I am missing all together?

More about : newly built start lights sounds brick

Maybe the switch in front of the case was plugged into the wrong set of pins?

Nope, I double checked that already and the power button pin is in the correct location.

Do you have the 24 main motherboard connector (duh) as well as a 4 or 8 pin connected for the cpu?

I've seen bad switches before although rare. Try shorting the pins with a screwdriver.

What pins would I have to short?

The 2 pins that your power button lead are connected to.

That did nothing.

Unplug all of you power connectors to you computer. Get a paper clip or something similar, and short the green hole with any black. If your psu switch is in the correct position, your power supply should turn on. If not...it is dead.

I wanted to do this test to start with, but my cables are all black and i don't see any defining marks. Is there a standard order to the cables or way i can tell which is which other than by color?

point connector down, holes to the floor, clip towards you. On mine (do it at your own risk) 3rd and 4th from left are black and green. The row closest to you.

Are you sure you have power coming out of the wall?

I got no response from that test so I guess it is a bad psu. Thanks for everything, you were a great help.

Here is our standard checklist. Try everything even if you think you already have.

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/261145-31-perform-ste...

Also I'm moving the thread to where it might get some actual help. The Forum Feedback section you posted this in is a place for people to post feedback about the website. Not the first place most of our experts look for people to help!

If the checklist does not fix it please post your complete specs as this may help us help you.

Oh and just to be stupid is the switch on the back of the power supply on?

You followed the complete checklist including breadboarding it? I have seen a short cause a computer not to boot a few times. Taking it out of the case will rule that out. If you followed all those steps and still get nothing then yes, you may have a dead PSU. A quick check with a multi meter will tell you. The list I linked you to tells you how.
