Question 1:

I am thinking of upgrading my GPU from nVidia to AMD

But I have the following hardware already:

TV: Samsung DLP HL67A750 (3D DLP TV) (HDMI 1.3) (native support for DLP LINK)
3D MODES: CHECKERBOARD

3D KIT:
1x 3D VISION EMITTER
3x 3D VISION ACTIVE SHUTTER GLASSES

Best 3D Gaming Mode:
1080P 60Hz (EACH EYE) (Checkerboard mode)

Will TriDef software be able to use this hardware to produce the same 3d (1080P 60Hz each eye) with my checkboard TV?

Question 2 (if Question 1 is NO):

Or will I have to by DLP Link Glasses, and will these work at the same 3d quality (1080P 60Hz each eye) with my checkboard TV?

Yes. TriDef does support a bunch of different modes, it probably supports it.

The one thing that is odd, is I thought the 3D Vision kit required a 120hz monitor. While the TV display does 120hz, it wouldn't support 120hz input. I'm curious how that worked before.

EDIT: another curious thing. I thought the checkboard mode was only for passive setups, while DLP is active.

Yes, I currently use the 3D Vision Kit to get 3D from the TV. (even tho I could have purchased DLP Link glasses instead (which won't have necessitated any emitter)) But the 3D Vision Kit was the only thing that supported 3D Games, not just movies at the time.

No, since Samsung did not include any glasses with the TV. I would have to buy glasses separately. Since it natively supports DLP Link, I guess I would have to buy any glasses that support the DLP Link Standard.

So if this is to work, TriDef must support Checkerboard synced by DLP Link?

Perhaps, there is a confusion between Input Hz and Output Hz.

DLPs are actually capable of producing frame rates far beyond 120Hz

Checkerboard DLPs, unlike Framepacking, SBS methods can fully support 1080P60. The GPU sends 1 frame per 1/60 second, and the TV outputs 2 frames per 1/60 seconds AKA 1 frame per 1/120 second AKA 120Hz

So Input from GPU = 60Hz (each frame containing enough data for 2 frames)
While Output to Glasses = 120Hz (60Hz / eye)




Checkerboard is an active setup, you might be thinking of Green/Blue, or Polarized setups

Thanks, that helped. It seems with a few of these formats, they are able to half the resolution so that the TV can take two images and send them in one frame. Similar to HD3D frame packing. At which point they split the image up and upscale it to fit the screen. I wonder how much loss of image quality is incurred due to this. I imagine it is better than doing 720p or 30hz as frame packing does, but I'm curious as to how it compares to a 3D Vision monitor, which takes two full images per frame.

You could probably download the trial version of Tridef now, which does work with Nvidia, and when doing the setup, see if there is an option for 3D checkboard.

Yes, at the risk of offending some people, I'll have to say 1080P24Hz 3D gaming is Lagathon, and 720P60Hz 3D gaming is just sad.

There is probably checkerboard option in TriDef, but it's just too bad if TriDef doesn't work with 3D Vision emitter paired with a AMD GPU, cause then that means I'll have to repurchase all the glasses again which is no fun.
 
If you don't have it installed, I do, and just checked. The TriDef software does support Samsung HDTV's, but there is no DLP checkboard option. There is no checkboard option for any monitor or 3D tech they showed. They support L/R and R/L with Samsung DLP 3d tv's.

I didn't know nVidia's 3D Monitors were actually FULL Frame 3D displays. Conventional knowledge says HDMI 1.4 doesn't have the bandwidth to do it.

Are you sure it is full frame? Do they use Dual DVI to work-around HDMI's bandwidth limitation?

It's just too bad 3D Gaming technology is so fragmented that it caused it's own demise. Honestly, the gimmickiness of 3D Movies also created a bad impression on 3D in general, and together with 3D industry's inability to cooperate, brought about 3D's market failure.

People have no idea how awesome 3D gaming is, and probably never will thanks to greedy marketing. /rant

Never heard of L/R R/L in Samsung DLP. Sounds like an error in labeling.
 
It's up to you. You can take a chance, but there is no mention of checkboard on any of the brands and modes.

I wouldn't say it was the marketing that is killing 3D, but bad versions of 3D. Such as movies that didn't do real 3D, that pop up conversion 3D, and games which don't support it. People see it done poorly and misjudge all 3D as bad. It also requires people to set it up for each individual person, which can't be automated, so people never see it correctly.

Btw, you probably are best off sticking with Nvidia. 3D Vision has better support than Tridef. I get way better performance when using 3d Vision than tridef (I hear tridef is heavily CPU bound). That and I get a load of game fixes here that doesn't work on anything but 3D Vision: http://helixmod.blogspot.com/2013/07/game-list-full.html

I'll check it out with the trial. If necessary, I might buy a cheap pair of DLP Link glasses around $20 to be sure. These 3D glasses have gradually come down in price in general.
