I'm looking for a laptop good for most basic tasks like web browsing and word processing, 1080p video playback and some occasional photo editing.

I found this Asus on Amazon for less than $300. I think it could do the job, however, i've been reading some reviews and people say is it too slow. Now I have doubts. Is the processor really that bad? What do you think? Is there anything better in this price range?

Asus X401U 14"
AMD E2-1800 Dual Core Processor (1.7 Ghz), 4GB DDR3 memory, 500GB hard drive (5400 rpm)
14" high-definition display, AMD Radeon HD 7340 graphics.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I doubt you'll be able to do any sort of photo editing with a $300 unless you're talking about using MS Paint.

I honestly can't suggest to you any $300 laptop. They're all bad. Unless you look into refurbished. But I don't have a lot of experience with refurbished laptops so can't say much.

Maybe you should look into tablets which will give you much better performance. For word processing, you could get a bluetooth keyboard or something. Photo editing is really out of the question with that sort of budget.

ignore the review clearly someone is offended by a fan noise of a laptop lol.

a8 is considered to be far superior due to the boost option in speed and better graphics

either of these would be enough for every day tasks etc

that's okay. i have Asus X45U with same specs but fewer RAM (2GB) and it can play 1080p video smoothly. web browsing, word processing is no demanding task so E2-1800 have no problem at all. and for photo editing, it done the job good. it's not great, but it's absolutely good
