I just built this computer recently, and I'm having an issue with it. At seemingly-random times - I could be browsing, streaming a video, playing WoW, playing Skyrim - it will restart suddenly. It does not BSOD, just does POST, beeps, and goes back into Windows. Thus far it's happened 4 times today in 2 hours. Three times with WoW + Firefox up, once with just Firefox. Last night I had only Firefox and HWMonitor up (temps less than 50C for all components) and it restarted again.

I ran a pass of Memtest86 and it passed with no errors. I have Windows booting from the SSD. I have not yet overclocked, though apparently I changed the settings from 9-9-9 to auto on the BIOS, though I changed those back manually and the BIOS log said those were the only changes made.

That's all I can think of. Any ideas on what to do to fix this? I'm also using HWMonitor and the temperatures never exceed 55C, which seems to be well within the appropriate range.

The computer itself is fantastic, runs incredibly well, and has no issue with running multiple applications and game mods... but it restarts without any warning (no slowing down, graphics issues, etc). Any help would be extremely welcome.

Note, for what it's worth: When it happens, the whole system just stops, fans and all and then it restarts instantly, POSTs and reloads back into Windows. I do not get a BSOD nor any error messages when it restarts (not sure if this is in W8.1, it was in W7 on my old laptop) and would say 'Windows has recovered from a serious error) or something.

Second note: I admit I'm a newb to troubleshooting, so if possible any specific points to check would be fantastic.

When a computer overheats it doesn't restart, it turns off immediately to protect the hardware components from being damaged so you can rule this out.

What I can suggest is the below:

1- Restore defaults on BIOS
2- Enter Safe Mode and see if this happens on Safe Mode as well.
3- Right click on your main drive which has the OS --> properties --> under "error checking" click "check now"

CHECK the boxes "automatically fix" and "scan and attempt recovery"

It should schedule an error checking of your HDD upon startup, so restart your computer and leave it to check everything and fix what it can fix then see if the problem persists.

Let me know to further assist you.

Thanks for the info on overheating, at the very least I can rule that out. And stop obsessively checking HWMonitor.

1 - will do

2 - I'm not sure what sets off the restarts... I've been playing WoW for an hour now and no issues. I've had other times where it's been fine for 4+ hours so what will Safe Mode tell me? (never used it except to run Malwarebytes on my Dad's old PC)

3 - will do.

Thanks for your help.

Well basically whether or not the computer restarts in Safe Mode, brings us closer to the cause of the restart. I had a similar problem where the laptop would restart randomly sometimes right after BIOS, I tried everything i even put in another HDD, ran through external HDD, tried different chargers since it was cutting only when on charge, i formatted, i literally left nothing out until yesterday i did step 3 in my previous answer and its running normally now. I dont know if that fixed it or if im lucky enough to have the full attention of my laptop for a couple of hours without restarting.

Let me know how it goes to try and help you further based on the results that you get.
