I would like to connect a projector in the living room to my desktop upstairs, without trailing wires.

Mostly video files to project.

Projector is Hitachi ed - x45.

it has hdmi, and composite phono RCA inputs, VGA also USB , but it does not play video through the USB connector, only Jpegs.

At present , I use a flash drive, connected to an android tablet and then connect to projector via hdmi.

Is there an easier way ... maybe with some kind of wireless device.

I don't think the projector LAN (rj45) socket will play videos , although , the way I read the manual , it will accept jpegs for display. ... ?

They make wireless HDMI extenders. These are completely different than wireless for networking though they may use the same radio frequencies so be sure to check. Pretty much they appear as a very long HDMI cable

You may be best asking in one of the video forums what feature you should look for. There seem to be rather mixed reviews on these devices. I suspect similar to wireless networking how well they work depend on what a persons house is made out of.

All the wireless video devices are line of sight or short range.

You'd have to run a video cable with a booster from the room with the computer up to the room with the projector, like a regular conference room would have. You'll have two of these things wired together http://www.fullcompass.com/common/products/original/170593.jpg, one for input from the computer, the other one upstairs in the room with the projector, with a long cable between them. You will need some specialized signal boosters tough as VGA quality degrades over distance, and HDMI I think has a length limit also.
