Our company provides software as service, a web based application to over 20000 users, although alot of them use our system infrequently because of their roles.

We are currently using Amazon cloud services, we are using one EC2 medium instance, the performance of those instances are really bad, especially after we upgraded to Server 2012 with SQL Server Standard. So we decided to build our own server and put it into a local data center. We got out parts list from : http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2012/10/building-servers-for-fun-and-prof-ok-maybe-just-for-fun.html, it's about 1 year old now so the CPU might not be the best option anymore.

Here are our parts list:

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1280 V2 Ivy Bridge 3.6 Ghz / 4.0 Ghz turbo quad-core $640
MB: SuperMicro X9SCM-F-O $190
RAM: 32 GB DDR3-1600 $292
Case: SuperMicro SC111LT-330CB 1U rackmount chassis $200
HDD: Two Samsung 830 512GB SSD $1080

Total about $2400.

Our Amazon EC2 server will now become our backup server in the case that our hardwares go down.

There is a lot of SQL operations involved, so a powerful CPU and faster hard drive would definitely help with our overall performance.

Any suggestions?

For something like this I would probably recommend a XEON E5 with ECC memory.

You need a server chassis, the one you have would normally be fine, but with dual CPUs, I would look for a PSU in the 500 watt range.

Compared to your build, you have 24 threads vs. 8 threads, ECC RAM which is more reliable, and the capacity to add a ridiculous amount. These SSDs are faster, though I would probably RAID0 them and have a mirrored image in case something happens.
