My current rig- Intel i5-2400@3.10 Ghz, Sapphire Radeon HD 7870 Ghz Edition 2 GB and 12 GB RAM

I have a 500W power supply in my gaming rig and I'm considering upgrading my rig with a new graphics card. I'm planning to get either a R9 280X or an R9 290. Will my current PSU be enough to accomodate that or do I have to buy a new one?

No, it will not run a 290 , you will have to buy a new one.

OK, but it'll run a 280X just fine, yes?

You will need a decent 600w - 650w.

Radeon R9-290X - 33A and a 600W psu minimum

Radeon R9-280X - 30A and a 550W psu minimum

So any decent 600/650W PSU can run the cards. Like Blackbird asked you what is the make/model of PSU ?

That thermaltake won't run a 280 or 290 it's a poor quality power supply.

Thanks dude for the help and the links to the PSUs :-) Looks like I'll have to be spending a bit extra than I had originally planned which is a bummer.

It's always a good idea to get a good reliable PSU to protect your other components.

Those Thermaltake TR2 PSU's are pretty bad. Their peak output is typically 85% lower than what they put on the box. That TR2 500 psu can only put out 425W.
