Hi,

My External HDD is throwing CRC error and I am unable to fix it.

When I connect the drive to my Laptop the following is happening:
-it just shows the drive as Local Disk (A:) but it does not display the bar which shows the number of GB free.
-I am unable to right click on the drive to check its properties.
-Every time I click on the drive it tries to load and finally throws CRC error.
I have also tried connecting it to a different laptop and its the same. However I am ABLE to access most of my data (Photos/Movies) when I connect it to my LG television.

I have tried the below and so far no luck:
-I tried changing the drive letter
-I ran the chkdsk A: and this is the log I got:
--------------------------------------------
Usn Journal verification completed.
The master file table's (MFT) BITMAP attribute is incorrect.
The Volume Bitmap is incorrect.
Windows has checked the file system and found problems.
Please run chkdsk /scan to find the problems and queue them for repair.

-Next I ran chkdsk A: /f and since then its been hanging at "Correcting errors in Volume Bitmap" for the past 10 hours :(

The type of the file system is NTFS.
Volume label is Elements.

Kindly help me resolve this. I have my son's 1st year pics and videos in it and I can't afford to loose them at any cost. Also I am hesitant to shell hundreds of dollars to recover the data.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You can find a list of the top 15 free recovery programs here

I use one called Power Data Recovery which I paid quite a bit for because i am in the IT industry and it has never failed me. Best thing to do is try though out. Keep in mind though that some of the free ones won't be able to scan the drive is it doesn't at least have a drive letter. If it has a drive letter then every one of these here should work.

Hello drtweak,

Thanks a lot for your inputs. As you suggested I ran the Crystal Disk Info and it reported caution for two of the attributes - Reallocated sector count and Current Pending sector count.

Please advise what is the best way to move forward to recover data. Any help is highly appreciated.
