I am building my first pc on Christmas day and I am worried about handling my components wrong and breaking them. I am building In the Corsair 540 case if that helps.

I have the Evga gtx 770 sc and I was baffled on how big and heavy it was. It looked a lot smaller on youtube. I have seen a lot of dudes pick it up by the metal side thing and the back chip thingy. Even after I have washed my hands, is it ok to touch the back of the gpu and motherboard.

cheers

lol it does sound overkill I know but static can be an issue if you dont take precautions, its each to there own. I do a lot of repairs and servicing, 90% of the time you dont need to discharge yourself ect but its that 10% and when you are paying huge dollar for a part then a piece of card on the floor and a cheap wristband is worth it. Graphics cards are quite resilient and are designed to be man handled but the rest of your system is not.
Doesn't make a difference what you touch, but if it has a brushed aluminium backplate try not to touch it because anodising can sometimes stain. You'll also have to watch out for static, but this generally isn't a problem unless you are going to wear socks and rub your feet fast on a carpet, just try to not wear stuff that could build up static, and ground yourself (touch a PSU that is plugged in).

If you are handling someone elses gear though, I'd take more extensive measures, much worse to wreck someone elses gear than your own.

You will be fine handling the board as long as hands are clean and you wear an antistatic band try and hold at edges or avoid areas with lots of components when handling. Wear trainers or shoes dont do it in socks ect as you will get static buildup also avoid wearing baggy clothes and stay away from woolen clothing as it a static nightmare. If you are on carpet then put cardboard down (it all sounds over the top and it probably is but it covers all chances of static damage. If you dont have a band then discharge yourself to earth first (touch a tap or metal heating pipe ect)

Is anti static that much of an issue I should buy a cheap wrist strap? That way I don't have to worry about wearing socks with carpet and not having to touch my case 1000 times
