How do I check external hard drive for possible issues?

Hello,

I was in the middle of backing up data when one of my external drives failed on me and corrupted a few important files. I have another exactly similar drive, and I was wondering how I can check it before I load it with data to make sure there aren't any issues with it? I'm using two WD My Passport USB 3.0's to backup my data, and I don't want there to be any issues with the other one.

That is weird, I would say it is fine...

Sorry I should have been more specific. I have another drive that is the exact same physically, but I haven't loaded it with data yet. I want to make sure it has no possible faults or issues like the other one did, before I load it up.

I used this and the short DST passed on the drive, but the short generic test failed. Is that normal since it's a WD and not a Seagate? I also used WD Drive Utilities and did a SMART check, quick drive test and complete drive test and it passed both of them. I should be fine to use it now right?

That is weird, I would say it is fine if the WD software said it is so I would not worry about it

Awesome! Thanks. I thought it was weird too but I also figured since it passed the WD checks and was never used before, it should be good to go.
