Hello, I am trying to set up a wired connection from my room to my router, my router is on the same floor (not by the control panel in the basement.) I have a (what i have been told is a modem outlet) but im not sure, i think its a modem, its a port slightly smaller for an ethernet cable to fit into. I want to know if i can get a connection from that, or if i need to just run an ethernet cable through the wall or something, or if i need to set up a powerline network. Also on a side note, ive seen ethernet outlets around my house, but i dont seem to have one in my room, does anybody know where i can find a map of that kind of stuff? Like is it on the blueprints to my house, or what?

The jack you have is a phone line. You may get lucky if you take the plate off and it may use wire that can be used for data. It should be marked on the side. Most newer houses they ran the same cable for data and phone.

Your largest issue it sounds like is finding where all the cabling terminates. Normally there is a central location that it all ends in. If you can find this you might be able to use this wire.

Finding wire in the walls is a huge pain you are best off just searching until you find the common point it all ends in. You can get a toner device for about $30 that will let you test wires but thick walls block it. I guess the only good thing is if the basement is not finished it is pretty easy to run ethernet cable...
