I'm building a new system but I am reusing an existing hdd that I pulled out of my laptop. This is unfortunately the only PC I have to work with so my question is how do I get the had ready to use in a brand new system.

Solution

Since drivers are installed by your Windows they are stored on the windows partition.

May I suggest booting in Safe mode with networking (keep pressing F8 as soon as you turn on your computer), then navigate to device manager (right click on computer -> manage -> device manager on the left panel), check for exclamation marks on all the components showing there and update all drivers using the internet or Windows update.

Also since you have built the system yourself, please ensure all internal components are well in place and all cables are well connected. A very common BSOD cause are the RAM sticks, either damaged or...

When you install your HDD in your system and boot your computer, your Windows should automatically detect drivers or ask you to install drivers. In any way, you can go to device manager and check which hardware needs drivers and you can install them from the internet or let it check if Windows already has some drivers from Windows Update.

Let me know how it goes in order to further help you,

No need, when your Windows detects the new hardware it will automatically attempt to install the drivers and for those which it can't find a driver it either tells you or you can find our which hardware still needs a driver from the device manager and you can install from there or manually from the manufacturer website.

When I tried putting my HDD in my new computer (just new motherboard/cpu) it would give em the blue screen of death if I tried to boot. I tried everything but eventually I had to wipe it.

I similarly tried to put them in an existing PC but it was an older one and it gave me the blue screen as well. What I'm wondering is if I need to format the drives and if so would just fomating the windows partition and reinstalling take care of the driver issues as well.

When is the BSOD coming up ? While it is booting up or when it's already inside windows?
