Hi Guys,

My current gaming rig has an amd fx-8120 (3,9Ghz), sabertooth 990fx. radeon 7850 and a 700w psu. I am looking to upgrade to a better GPU to increase performance but i don't know if the 8120 will be a bottleneck if i buy a 7970. I regret buying the 8120 but i wouldn't want to replace such an expensive mobo to get intel. The parts are around a year old so i'm not looking to completely change my rig. I would greatly appreciate your advice on what i should buy to get an upgrade.

Edit: forgot to say, i want to spend around 300-400$

I can buy the XFX 7970 Ghz edition for 290 € at my local hardware store.

apart from that, another card would also be good. I just want to know what my options are and if i could use a 7970 in combination with my 8120 without any bottleneck from the cpu.

there definitely won't be any bottleneck. But you'd see better performance if you had a better CPU (obviously).
You should try overclocking your CPU more though.

Another option would be the GTX 770

Thanks for your answer. I think i'm going to buy the XFX 7970 Ghz edition. Would it be worth upgrading my cpu? If i buy a new one i'm definitely not going for a 8350, i would go with a haswell right away but i don't think i'm willing to spend that money.

About the overclocking, i have a cooler master hyper 212 EVO and i use auto overclocking on my mobo. I'm a noob at overclocking. Can you give me any advice on overclocking my CPU manually?

no it wouldnt be worth upgrading for now.

auto is really limiting you. You should be able to get 4.3ghz. There are tons of overclocking stuff on the internet that'll make much more sense than my writing.
