i Just built a new computer and installed ubuntu 13.10 on it but i cant access the internet. I imagine it is because i am missing a driver. I did not install all the drivers that came with the motherboard since they are only for windows. I am using a usb wireless wifi adapter and it is half working. It plugs and i can connect to my network but then i cant access the internet.

my mobo: http://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-DDR3-Micro-Motherboard-GA-78LMT-USB3/dp/B009FC3YJ8

my adapter: http://www.amazon.ca/Axpertec-Inc-Wireless-Adapter-EW-7811Un/dp/B003MTTJOY/ref=pd_bxgy_ce_img_b

Linux comes with its own, fairly comprehensive set of drivers. If Ubuntu is seeing the wireless network it already has a driver. I'd try re-setting your router. Un-plug the router (or switch it off if it has a switch) and re-start it after one minute, then reboot the PC.

My router is fine, it works on every other device in my house. It maybe a driver missing for the adapter?

If Ubuntu were missing the driver entirely you wouldn't be able to see any wifi networks at all. The router may well work with everything else but sometimes there's a conflict between devices on the network which can be resolved by resetting the router.

i restarted the router and it still does not work

OK, I visited the Amazon link to the USB dongle and googled the model number and the support site doesn't list what actual wireless chipset it uses (whether the chip inside is from Atheros, Realtek, Broadcom or other company and the specific model).

However the support website does have a linux driver download.

http://www.edimax.com/en/support_detail.php?pd_id=347&pl1_id=1&pl2_id=

First it may be easier to check the CD that came with the package to see if you can install that driver from there. If that's not available, use another PC to download the driver (the first one, on top of the list) to a flash drive and transfer it to Ubuntu that way. The download from the website seems to be a zip file with a text file inside which provides instructions on how to install the driver.

how do i install the driver, i dont really understand the text file sorry, also i<m pretty sure its realtek chipset

Yes, according to the documents in the driver package it's realtek.

There's a newer version of the driver at the Realtek support site, here:

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PFid=48&Level=5&Conn=4&ProdID=231&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false&Downloads=true

Scroll down the page to the driver that indicates Linux/Android as the OS supported and download, then unzip. This package makes it easier by including an "install.sh" file inside the package. Just run that file - instructions here if you need help on that:
