Okay, so this is slightly more complicated than the title entails. I will describe in as best detail as i can. I have a 500GB hard drive that is just about to pack up, stop working (i know, different topic) And i have two other hard drives. A brand new 1TB one and an old 250Gb one that contains windows XP and some Basic programs. I would like To transfer windows 7 from my current 500gb to the 250gb one and use that just for the operating system and backups, and use the 1tb one for everything else, documents, games etc. now to transfer win7 i know i need a system image. when i go on the appropriate page, it ants to copy my whole c drive. The reason i cant do this is because the external HDD i am putting the system disk on has only about 50 gb worth of space. so thats the first problem. (creating a system disk) secondly is, do i have to format the 250gb one for it to accept the system image, if so.. how? Also how would i use the 250gb one and the 1tb one together, do i set it up in raid, or just have them both plugged in? If you need anymore information just ask. also will this setup the 250 for windows and the 1tb for everything else, be efficient, such as will it be safer, or faster or.. i don't know, better? if you can answer any of these, i thank you.

Ummm... my questions to you:

1) Do you have the Windows install DVD so you can install a fresh copy of Windows and are you comfortable with doing so?
2) Do you have a utility like Norton Ghost 2003 or some other utility that images the entire content of the hard drive?
3) Are you willing to spend $50 to $100 to get an SSD drive instead while you're at it? The SSD will improve your PC performance as if you just bought a brand spanking new computer. Plus, hard drives can die so why keep all those hard drives? You could replace the old 250GB one with an SSD, keep the OS and applications on the SSD to speed thing sup and keep documents/pictures/videos etc. on the 1TB drive.

As for RAID, it depends on your motherboard's capability...

As for RAID, it depends on your motherboard's capability. There's RAID 0 all the way through RAID 1+0 and a bunch of others. Saying you want to use RAID is like saying you want to buy a car. That doesn't tell us what RAID exactly or what car exactly you want. RAID 0 is generally what people use RAID for in home systems. This increases performance a little, but typically is best to have two hard drives of the same make/model/size. Other RAID methods are generally used by companies.

Yes, you generally have to format a drive before you can use it. You can do this by going to Start > right-click Computer > Manage, Disk Management.

Plus if the 250GB drive is old, you never told us what speed/connection it is, what the motherboard is capable of, what the other drives are. It does not make sense to put Windows on a slower drive that may or may not die on you. Your system will just be slower. It sounds like you're going to use that 500GB elsewhere, which I assume that and the 1TB are newer.

So help me answer these questions so I can help you. Help me help you.

I do not have the windows install dvd, do i have a utility like that no? But i sure can get one, clonezilla for example. Though an SSD would be nice, it would not be worth the money too me. i know the boot time is pretty quick on SSD's but thats about it. I dont understand Raid. i know its different ways of using multiple hard drives in conjunction with eachother. I do believe the 250GB one is slower. so should i put everything on the 1TB one? the 1tb one is a WD Black WD1002FAEX - hard drive - 1 TB - SATA-600. So would it be more productive to have windows plus everything else on the 1tb one. also the 500GB one i wont be using as it is broken/ breaking. My motherboard isnt new by any standards, ddr2 memory, amd athlon x2 64 at 2.8GHz. so i dont have a new computer by any means but its still mine. if i am using just the 1tb one couldnt i just plug both 500GB drive and 1TB drive and just clone the contents over?
