Ms updates not installed

Almost every day I get an announcement that there are a number of updates to be installed ready to go. I click it and it starts to download and install the updates. When it's finished I may get "The following updates were not installed". It's usually the "Ms .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1" that didn't install. Is it important? Why does this happen more than once? Can I prevent it?

Yesterday I had some 6 updates and today another group of updates are ready.
Why are there so many updates?
I run XP Pro Sp3.

There is no error code, just text.
The other part of this area are the number and frequency of updates alsost every day. Why?
Yesterday I got 3, today there are 4.
I thought fixes to XP were being dropped by MS!!

I did as you suggested and Googled "The following updates were not installed" and received many responses. I will try some of them and report back. This problem has been around for years!!
