I just bought new corsair vengeance 1866 (2 x 4gb) ram for my laptop. My laptop is a hp-e020ca. I just replaced the ram in my laptop with the 2 sticks of corsair memory but when I log on my computer it still says there is 4.0gb (3.22 gb usable). I checked the bios and it also says 4.0 gb of memory but I can't find anywhere to change it. By the way I am running windows 8.1. Does anyone know what's wrong?

Are you running the 32-bit version of Windows?
If so, it doesn't support more than 4GB of ram.

To fix your problem, you're gonna have to buy the 64-bit version or use a free OS such as Ubuntu.

Are the ram purchased compatible with your motherboard?
If so, test your memory sticks one by one.

Hey I'm kind of embarrassed to admit it but that was my problem. It really felt like they were in there properly but one must not have been. Thanks.
