So I just ordered (or at least my dad did) a new PC build from newegg and now I just realized that I forgot to add the DVD drive to the cart since there where 16 other items. Anyways my question is is it possible to install Windows 8.1 through an external DVD drive via USB?

tbh most people leave an optical drive out of new builds anyway. hardly any use for them anymore, no wonder you forgot one.

you can create a bootable windows install USB drive and just install from that. I dont have a link to hand, but just do a search for it, there are a few free utils that will do it for you. You just need access to a dvd drive on another machine.

It is completely possible to make a bootable USB with Windows 7 (not sure about 8.1)
For W7: http://arstechnica.com/business/2009/12/the-usb-flash-drive/

As it is with W7, I'm sure it's possible with 8.1 to make a bootable flash drive that will act as your install disk.
