part of the whole

I have a WD external drive that no longer shows up on screen when connected via the same cable as previously used going direct to the mac. Have since been advised of the drive's sensitivity as far as it's resting position, and the method of ejection from the mac being the cause of it's failure.

Has this problem occurred before?, assuming that this mistake is not the first time and hopefully the solution is known of if any data can be recovered?

Appreciate any assistance.

Solution
Testdisk is what I would use to recover the partition but you might want to check to see what other tools might be available as testdisk is certainly not the user friendliest solution.
I would try it on another computer.
If it does not work on another computer with the same or different cable, then I would open it up the casing (if warranty is expired) and remove the hard drive from the caseing and test inside computer directly hooked up to a SATA connection. The boards in the external casing tend to go bad sometimes, but the hard drive will work as an internal drive, or you could go buy another enclosure for $15=$20 to house the hard drive.
