Windows 7 x64 black screen and mouse cursor on startup

So recently I've been having issues with my sound card on my PC as it will randomly stop working and I will have to restart. However it happened again recently and now my computer starts up but once I'm logged in I'm presented with an unresponsive black screen and mouse cursor. Can anyone help?

I was able to ctrl-alt-delete and view the task manager, and shut down the computer, after rebooting for some reason it's fine. I have no clue how I fixed it :/
