I am planning to upgrade from 6670 to 7870 and unsure whether my CPU would bottleneck the GPU.

yes it will bottleneck when playing cpu demanding games like battlefeld 3, 4, starcraft, crysis 2/3, you will get a bit of stutering

Are you kidding me? That's a quad core 4.2 GHz processor.. Shouldn't bottleneck that card.

fx-4170 has 4 cores but only 2 modules which in my opinion it doesnt make it a true quad core
my quad core i5 760 @3.2ghz is a very little behind fx 4170 4.2ghz in gaming.

the higher the clock speed doenst necessarily mean better performance. For example intel cpus at lower clock speed will outperform AMD cpus at higher clock speeds because of their IPC.

Not the best quad core architecture, I know. But, I've checked and, paired with his GPU it will run BF4 on recommended settings, with slightly lower score than his GPU. Meaning they actually match each other nicely.
