my headphones icon is missing since this morning, no explanation... the sound works for speakers and headphones. Only the speakers and digital output device icons are showing in the control panel: Sound.
I would like to know how to recover my headphone icon.

Hello.
Did you find a solution to your problem ?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My Problems : NOTE : I am running Windows 7.

Headphones or Speakers are both connected.
When using Speakers as default playback devices, the sound icon appears correctly.
When using headphone is used as default, the is a cross ( X ) on the sound icon and when clicked on it, it says Troubleshooting audio window appears.Even so, you can still hear sound from your headphone but you are unable to adjust the sound of your headphone and if you wanted to, you would have to right-click on the sound icon. Here , you have to select your headphones( without icon ) and click properties , then on headphone properties, go to levels and adjust your volume but this is kind of tedious.

BEFORE READING THE SOLUTION BELOW, VERIFY THAT YOUR PROBLEMS MATCHED MINE.You can now proceed to the next section. Thanks

My SOLUTION (If you still have not find a solution )
:::
-- Right-click on the sound icon, click on Playback devices
--Click on your headphone ( that has no icon ) and click on Properties
--Now, click change icon ( For me, it says Look for icons in this file : " C:\Windows\System32\shell32.dll " ). As you can see, there are no headphone icons in this location .

--If you want the headphone icon that badly, click browse go to : C:\Windows\System32 .
Also, you have to select (Icon files or All files) from the drop-down list menu ( Where is it found ? Ans: Above the Open and Cancel buttons ) before you start SEARCHING.
In System32, search for mmres.dll , then click Open.

Now, the location should be : " C:\Windows\System32\mmres.dll " and you can now see several headphone icons.
--Click on the one you like , Click OK, Apply , OK and OK.
The sound icon will appear correctly ( No cross ) and when clicked , you can see your headphone icon too.

I hope this was helpful.Thanks.
