So I have been trying to follow the r9 280x 290/290x debates on price. I understand that the price was great when the reference modeles came out ($299.99 for the 280x, $399.99 for the 290, and $549.99 for the 290x) but the price went up due to those bitcoin savages. The prices are now are about $420 for a 280x, $530 for a 290, and $700 for a 290x. I can understand people complaining about the 280x and 290x price, but why the 290 price?

As soon as MSI/SAPPHIRE said that there 290 would be $530, people were sating "How could they price them so high?! " "why would anyone pay that much?!" "They will never sell any of those over price cards"

Unless i'm missing something, the 290 does 2-5% better then the GTX 780 in terms of FPS in games, and its only $0-$20 more expensive....... are people mad because AMD is usually the better value/per performance? Or is there something wrong with the new amd cards?

On another note, I am currently looking for a new GPU. My price range is $500-$550 and I am currently looking forward to the SAPPHIRE TRI-X R9 290 4GB GDDR5 OC

The current benchmarks look great, and I think that card looks sexy (some people hate it for some reason)

Has Sapphire released the price yet for USA for the card? Also have they released a time frame when they will be available (other then soon)? I know that gigabyte has there windforce available now (both 290/290x prices at $479.99 and $699.99) But in Europe the new sapphire card seems to be about $440 USD for pre-order (after conversion from euro)

Solution
ignore the guy above. the 3rd party cooled 290's are beast, but they don't always outperform the 780. i'd wait till they drop in price again

I have been going with AMD for a while and have not been disappointed, I have had a 7870 and 7970 and loved both of them. (Just sold the 7970 for $400 to some bit coin miner, I originally bought if for $280) and my friend has the 280x and it preformed a tad bit better then the 7970, with no microstuttering. I would rather get a 290, then a 780, but it all depends on availability, if I cant get my hands on that 290 then ill probably get the 780 from asus.

I really don't think the cards ill drop that dramatically to where people who didn't want the card would buy the card, its like the companies are building a pillar out of mud, they quickly pile on more to the price, but will only slowly decrease the price as they sink back down. I can maybe see the card being about $30-$40 cheaper in 2-3 months or so. Of course, this will change if a new line of cards is brought out, but there is no new news for future cards anytime soon.
Plus the price for performance is fine, I would still be willing to pay $530 for a non reference model with out hesitation.

I think ill just wait it out, i'm not playing any games that really need a GPU right now (Just using the Intel 4000 off my i7 3770k), i,m waiting for summer to get back into gaming. Hopefully the cards swill drop in price by then.
