Apu and ram

I know that the speed of the ram really affects the performance of an apu but do I need 8 gigs or is 4 enough. Im on a tight budget

Generally speaking the more the better, APU's share your RAM with the GPU as well so memory bandwidth and amount are of importance.

Im asuming if you have an AMD trinity or something of the sort? if so 4 would be okay but you need to make sure the speed of the ram is high- like ddr3 2133 high or better yet ddr3 2400
