Recently my harddrive broke and was replaced. i've re-installed windows 7 from the disc i received when i bought the laptop. Now, when i try to connect to a wireless network there's none available, i'm unable to detect any. i've then tried to connect via ethernet and i'm still unable to.
i've browsed some of the troubleshoot forums here and i've attempted the suggested fixes but i've been unsuccessful.

i'm confident i've narrowed the issue down and where it lies is with my network adaptor or rather, the lack of. when i enter device manager>network adaptors there's only 2 devices i can see and they're both bluetooth (personal area network & rfcomm prot tdi).

I also have the resource disc from the initial purchase. i've tried to extract and install some drivers from that and successfully in one case (bluetooth) however, when i try the others i get an error message "this software package cannot be installed on your system, setup will exit". through process of elimination i've tried all of them and none seem to work.

any advice would be appreciated, thanks in advance

Tom

UHmmm OUCH! Did you check your BIOS to make sure it wasn't accidentally turned off. Worst case you have to get the m17xR3 service manual to know how to properly 'take apart' you laptop to get at the Watch Battery for BIOS (your battery and power would be unplugged) and remove it, wait 10 min then reinsert it, reassemble then start up (try without the battery installed) and check the BIOS. Does it show where you can disable the NIC/Wireless? On my R2 I do know that the wireless gets disabled though the stupid touch panel at the top of the keyboard, which is a real pain when it gets 'stuck' off because the Alienware Command Center fubars for some odd reason.

I would also suggest downloading from Dell's website ALL links for updated files for your model, then run each, starting with the BIOS and then each driver. If none of them are working (as your suggesting) then it might not been just your HDD that broke, but actually the I/O controller on the Mobo died. I just got through with someone else about their R3, and basically it got to that point after replaceing the HDD on his as well (search forum for your Alienware). So I am getting suspicious about the R3 if I see more posts of similiar issues.

dl'd some drivers from dell website, no joy. also tried to install an update for the bios or some such but i'm unable to complete the wizard because my battery's dead and it needs to be above 10%. battery hasn't charged in months in all honesty, think i read it could be because of an out of date bios but it's very possible its had its day. will look to see if there's a way around this.

the two network drivers i tried 'Bigfoot Networks Killer Wireless-N 1103 a/g/n 3x3 MIMO' & 'Intel(R) WiFi Link 6300 Driver'

will check the other suggestions you've made soon

Well if you type in your serial number it will let you know what ones you need. But you shouldn't be doing any of this with the battery in, it maybe causing feedback on the power because you never took out it while sitting on your desktop all the time. Batteries need to be used all the time or else removed to keep them from being overcharged.
