I currently have an amd-6100 cpu, a nvidia GTX 660 and 8gb. I really want to be able to play graphically intensive games, such as Day Z and Battelfied 4. I was wondering if i would be able to change my motherboard and cpu to an intel i7? And what sort of motherboard would i need?

Any help would be much appreciated!

As long as your RAM is DDR3, it will work fine. I'd recommend getting the i5-4670k with a Z87 motherboard. I don't know your budget, but these are great boards:

MSI Z87 G43 Gaming: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/msi-motherboard-z87g43gaming
MSI Z87 GD65 Gaming: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/msi-motherboard-z87gd65gaming
Asus Z87 PLUS: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-motherboard-z87plus
Gigabyte Z87X-OC: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/gigabyte-motherboard-gaz87xoc

In most games, the i5 performs on par if not better than the i7. There are a few games like BF4 where the i7 is better, but the i7 is also more expensive. Here are some benchmarks.

If you already have an Am3+ board upgrade to a piledriver FX 8320/8350. The 6100 you have is bulldozer architecture and the performance is pretty poor.

No need to get a new motherboard/cpu/copy of windows to switch to intel.

Having said that, intel is generally better. There are quite a few games where you won't see a difference between them though.

You probably have an OEM version of Windows (did your PC come with a sticker with the code oon it? If so, probably OEM) which is tied to the motherboard. Since you're changing to intel, and therefore your motherboard, you will need to purchase a new copy of windows.

If you were to just upgrade to an FX 8320/8350 you wouldn't have to do that.
