Hi all, my desktop has broken pins for sure, but I didn't know any other problems I could find. I brought my desktop to Canada Computers for repairs. The motherboard would then be swapped. Now I received a call a few days later and they told me on top of a broken motherboard, my CPU i5 2400 was also broken. Now can a damaged CPU damage a brand new motherboard? I am now looking to spend another $200 for an i5 on top of my $70 motherboard.. I have lost a lot of money now because of trying to get a new motherboard

Yes it can damage the pins on the socket if the receivers on it are faulty/broken or so if they are talking physical damage.

Canada Computers is an extremely reputable company. They have very high standards for their technicians so I highly doubt that they're bullshitting you.

Do you have any thoughts on FutureShop, Bestbuy, or Staples?
If I were to get future repairs, where should I go?
However, I would definitely go to CanadaComputers for computer components.

I do all my computer repairs myself so I can not really comment apart from I would never let a member of the Geek squad touch my computers.

Canada Computers or NCIX are the places that you should go for repairs. Avoid FutureShop and BestBuy like the plague, they will just reformat your computer and call it a day. No clue on staples.

Where are you located?

If you're in downtown Toronto you should take it to CC as I recommended. I'm not familiar with the CC stores in Toronto but the ones in Mississauga and Hamilton are great.

Yeah I've heard nothing but good things from the Hamilton Canada Computers. The technician called back and is now replacing my dead CPU with an i5 3570. I hope everything works out.

By the way, do you ever think that a computer repair store will look into your personal files and such after fixing a computer? I saw a video on youtube where someone put a secret spy cam and booked "repair technicians" taking a peek at personal files. Although I've only read stuff like this happen in US this may happen in Canada, no ?

It's been known to happen. Some outlets have a policy of keeping an eye out for illicit material and reporting it to the police if they see some, but most places have firm anti-snooping policies. Employees have been fired from some locations for sifting through personal data with no clear reason to do so.
