Hi

I want to upgrade/buy a new system to improve on rendertimes.

I did architectural visualisation in my previous job, but have gone back to study, im at a point where i want to get a faster system for private projects, that is dedicated towards rendering.
I mainly work with stills, rather than animations, so i don't need to factor in animation.

I mainly use 3DS Max, Vray, Photoshop. I would like to get into Zbrush at some stage, but thats irrelevant right now :)

I had a look at gpu rendering, chaining nvidia gpus together, but I think I would like to concentrate on cpu.
In terms of gpus, im thinking of putting something cheap in there, until those maxwell cards are out.
The Quadro 6000 is just too much money i feel. The Quadro 4000 is still priced up there with a high end GTX, and 3DS max isnt overly fussy with nvidia cards, so i may wait till march for the big GPU spend.
My GTX 285 is fine in the viewport, but if I'm going to be using that machine as a rendernode, i am under the assumption it has to stay with the machine.

To those who have decent knowledge on building systems for arch vis studios, game/animation studios etc, id love some advice.

New system spec;

Intel 4930K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge-E) Socket LGA2011 Processor
Asus P9X79 Intel X79 (Socket 2011) DDR3 Motherboard
2x Corsair Vengeance RED 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 PC3-17100C11 2133MHz Dual/Quad Channel Kit bringing this to 32gb (overkill perhaps?)
Samsung 512GB SSD 840 PRO SATA 6Gb/s
Antic P183 v3 tower (I also looked at Lian Li PC-V2120X Aluminium Full Tower Case)
Zalman CNPS12X Ultimate Performance Triple Fan CPU Cooler
GPU - undecided

I will most likely put a soundcard/wifi card/optical drive in there aswell, but these are not of importance right now.
Maybe add an additional large HDD to backup to, however the OS and project work will go on SSD.

This initial spec I put together, has come in at about £2k, thats without a gpu currently

My current spec;

Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 Intel X58
Intel® Core™ i7 965 3.20GHz Extreme
Corsair XMS3 12GB (6x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz
500GB 7200RPM SATA II
Palit GeForce GTX 285 with 2GB GDDR3

Current system, make it a dedicated render node?

I was thinking, if I get a new system, I could use my current as a render node.

If I was to use this approach, and transform my current system into a rendernode once the new system is setup, what changes should I make to get it as effective as possible?
Its currently setup in a full tower, but would be great to change its casing to minamise space.

Thanks for looking, hope you can help :)
