AMD is releasing a new API called "mantle" later this month (might have been delayed)
Nvidia has a program called shadow play for recording, definitely worth Google-ing to find out more on, its amazing.
Top 2 reasons I can think of now for each one.

Nvidia has the best gpu on the market at the moment at a high price, other than that they match each other up pretty well at different price points
