I bought a new laptop a couple of months ago and it asked me to update it this afternoon so I did. Now its not recognising any disk I put in. Is there a way I can fix it without taking it in to a specialist?

From what you have said, it appears that either the drivers for the cd drive have been corrupted during the update, which you should be able to roll back the update and see if that helps or download the drivers from the manufacturer and try reinstalling. Now option 2, is that the cd drive has died and will need to be replaced. You could also try using a cd cleaner on it, maybe the laser is dirty, that could also prevent it from reading discs
