So i recently built a new PC, but i dont get 60 FPS in many of the new games out there, nor many of the older games. My friend also got a new PC and he gets 60 FPS or more all the time, even though i have a better graphics card than him. Any idea why? Any help is much appreciated :)

My PC parts:
GeForce GTX 780ti (Graphicscard)
Asus MAXIMUS VI HERO (Motherboard)
i7 4770k (Processor)
Samsung 840 EVO (SSD)
Silencer MK III 750w (PSU)
Corsair 8GB RAM

I just know that my friend has GeForce GTX 780, 8GB RAM, Samsung 840 EVO, and an i7 processor.

I'm new to this site, so please excuse me if i have a lack of information in this thread.

Update: Turning off MSAA results in great fps, but isn't my videocard supposed to handle atleast 2x MSAA?

Have you checked for any updated drivers for your motherboard, bios, video card etc, sometimes you can experience degraded game performance if any of the above are not up to date. Also, it may be related to your internet connection, as your system can only display the information as fast as your connection can download it, a good site to check your connection speed is www.speedtest.net
For some additional info, can you list the games that you are having the problem with etc...

We both use 1920x1080 monitors. Take Far Cry 3 for an example: We both use every setting on ultra. I used Fraps to see how much fps i had. Normally i would lay around 50 Fps and when in a firefight it would drop down to around 40. I can't say i know how much fps he's got exactly, but i can clearly see that he has a smoother framrate.

I know i have updated my driver for my graphics card, but i don't know for sure about the motherboard. And what is BIOS? I've heard it before, but i have no idea of what it might be. I also can't seem so go past a certain fps at Fallout: New Vegas

Also, i have a pretty old monitor. Maybe four or more years old. Since i couldn't find a DVI cable to use for it, i had to use some sort of thing that let's me use a HDMI cable from my PC to this thing so i could plug it into my monitor as a DVI cable. My pc does not support VGA, and my monitor does not support HDMI. Can this possibly be the problem?

Monitor is a BenQ G2420HDB

check your temperatures... if you don't have enough airflow through your case or the cpu-cooler is not properly seated the system will throttle itself down to stay within the thermals....

use HWmonitor or something to check the temperatures of your system...

also, you did plug the monitor cable in the 780ti right and not in the video out of your mobo?

that setup should be able to run farcry 3 on 60fps easily so that's not it... I assume both of you are running the same OS (XP, Windows 7, 8 or 8.1) and the 64 bit version of it?
Are all the PCI-E power connectors plugged in your GTX? And last but not least, use FXAA or TXAA with your nvidia card and not MSAA!! that setting will definately kill the performance on any GPU!!

There are a lot of good info in here for you, another angle to consider is the use of frapps can lower frame rates when in use and the fact that your monitor is an older model and might not be capable of taking full advantage of the features of your card etc...

Yeah, something is wrong there, I run this game with 2x5850's and get more then 80FPS at that res on old 1100T. Have you tried to update drivers? How about downgrading drivers? Might be something the 780 might not like.

Also check temps, I know the card and CPU is vary new, but might have an issue with the mounting/thermal paste and it might be throttling. 80C is safe for the 780, I don't recommend any higher tho it wont hurt it, CPU 70C would be as far as I would let it go. Also What PCI-E slot do you have the card in? Might have it in a slower slot. Use the top slot if your not, by the looks of the picture in newegg, the bottom two slots are x8 slots, which would slow the card down a bit.

Just suggestions, good luck!

Good point... If you're recording while you use Fraps, that would take a significant hit on your performance. Make sure the FPS number is yellow, not red.

Also, I highly suggest you use NVidia's Shadowplay instead of Fraps. Go to nvidia.com and under drivers download GeForce Experience. It takes a much smaller performance hit.

Far Cry 3 does not support FXAA or TXAA.
But i tested something. Once i turn on MSAA the fps just drops drastically. I used the lowest MSAA setting and it dropped down to about 45 fps right away. I have a minimum of 60 fps when i don't use MSAA, ans it can come up to about 90-100.
