Hello guys,

It seems my GPU failed me an hour ago since i have have awful artefacts everywhere on my screen (who are already there at the BIOS screen...). Therefore i jump to the conclusion that I need a new graphic card !

But I m a bit outdated about the new stuff, i don't even know if i cna actually use my motherboard with newest GC. Is my CPU rubbish now ? should i consider changing the all thing ?

So here are my specs:

Asus P5Q3
Intel Q6600
Nvidia 9800Gtx+ (Dead)
4Go Ram
i guess HD & PSU doesnt matter :)

I like gaming and my actual CG was still doing descently for what I play. So I'm looking for a good quality/cost ratio. If I can do 4 more years with it it woud be nice :)

Thanks !

Your mobo is LGA775, which is a well and truly dead socket. The CPU in there is among the strongest on the socket (might be wrong here), so theres not much point trying to dig up a slightly better one. If you want to upgrade the CPU, your basically going to have to go for a whole platform upgrade (CPU, Mobo, RAM, HDD and optical if their IDE)

You can throw whatever graphics card you want into that rig, a 290X or 780Ti would function in that rig, its just a question of whether your CPU can keep up with it.

Well your mother board does support PCIe 2.0, so any of the new graphics cards will work in there. Your CPU is out dated for sure. As far as what you should get, it all depends on your price range. AMD cards offer better bang for the buck, but nVidia cards at this generation are less power hungry, and run cooler and quieter.

Graphics card is artifacting in the BIOS, yup, that card's pretty dead :p.

You should be fine to throw whatever graphics card you want into that rig so long as your PSU can handle it (it does actually matter), given that your 9800GTX requires dual 6pins, it should be able to run whatever cards are out there.
Though the CPU is going to limit what you can effectively put in there, it will bottleneck cards at some point. I would be looking at cards no higher than maybe an R9-260 or GTX650Ti.

Whether it lasts another four years is up to your other components I think.

I'm glad to hear that ! (for my motherboard not my outdated CPU =p )
Well if i can just change my GC as a first step (since it's quite urgent) without empering any further upgrade i could make in a near future it's already a great news.

Oh already 3 answers ! Sweet.
Actually my PSU burned 3 months ago (I found great help here, thats why i m back again!). I replaced it with a nice Corsair 600W.

Since everybody agreed about my weak CPU can you tell me what kind of CPU i can plug into my Motherboard (32bit/64bits thingies, im a bit lost) ? Can i pick anything like for my GC ?

I usually do this kind of research myself but with the artefacts all over the screens its a pain in the a..
Thanks for your help guys

Alright guys i keep tje ref of your CG and will check that tomorrow on an other comp before going shopping :) Btw i'm stun everybody gave me AMD ref. "Back in my time" (lol) Nvidia was doing the show

I'd be glad to have a couple ref for a CPU that would fit my motherboard (Is there any reason i'd change my MB ?)

Ok thanks a lot Manofchalk, it was exactly what i was looking for.
I'll stick to a new GC for the moment and change MB+CPU later then.

Thanks everybody i'm sorry i can't pick all your answers

Back in your time Nvidia had the 8800GT, which was a year later rebranded into the 9800GT you have in your rig, which was by far the most powerful graphics card on the market. The next powerful card released was the 9800x2, which was just two of them on the one board.
Its a pretty legendary card.

no sorry i meant "oven trick"
r and n are roughly the same on my screen now lol

In case of artifacts could it help to put it in the oven ?
Don't know if you are an expert of the method ^^

I'm back from the shop who was running low stock (couldnt choose what i want). So he sold me a GTX760 at 210 instead of 240$.
I'll keep my current CPU/MB... for few month and keep my GC for my next config.

Btw i forgot the oven trick when i saw i had to remove all the stuff on it ( I was lacking the thermal past too)

Thanks all for posting advice/help I really appreciate.

Yeah actually i have the same FPS in the few games im playing who are requiring lot of ressources... which is quite frustrating !

By bottleneck you mean i wont be able to use fully the card because of my CPU right ? Just to be sure
If so I'll prolly build a new config sooner !
