Hello everyone,

I was looking to change my setup from one to 3-4 monitors. Right now my graphics card has 1 HDMI, 1 DVI, and 1 displayport. I've heard from some people that I would need a display port for each of my monitors, but other people have told me I could just daisy-chain off the single display port using a displayport to dvi. So my question is, would I be able to have 3+ monitors with this graphics card and if so which splitters should I use, or would I need to upgrade to something with more displayports?
Thank you!

You can have multiple 1080p displays running from a single DP connection, though you either need a Displayport hub or monitor/s that can act as a pass-through (has a DP in and out port, which very few do).

Damn these hubs are expensive.

I suggest getting monitors with native Displayport inputs, because getting Active adapters on top of this hub will rack up costs very quickly.

Is each monitor independent or will they all multiply the same one?

You can have it as either, you would set it up in software.
Normally splitters like that would just mirror the same video across all the screens, but Displayport is the exception. It can be split into independent video signals.

Alright, thanks! And one more, pretty confident in this but I can just use a Displayport to DVI from one of these, correct?

are you looking for gaming-quality or just productivity-quality graphics? for gaming, it'll cost you less than a car. for productivity, it's very simple and affordable if you just use two cards and run 3 monitors from each (will likely need to disable crossfire / sli to actually do it). i'm currently running dual 7790s for 6 screens, and it's fine for non-game stuff. no DisplayPort used at all, just DVI and HDMI.

Are you using the HDMI then a DVI splitter, then? All independent monitors?

all discrete / independent monitors, each has only a DVI input (well, they have VGA inputs as well but I don't use those), and there's no crossfire or eyefinity so that when i maximize a window, it fills ONLY the one monitor and not the entire array. i'm using an HDMI-to-DVI cable (along with native DVI cables), which is easily available on eBay or most decent computer stores.

it's actually kinda nice cuz in Win8.1 I can have one monitor showing me the Metro screen while the others are showing me the desktop screen. kinda cool.

What ports do you have on one of the video cards?

they're both ASUS HD7790 cards. I have DVD-I, DVD-D, HDMI, and DisplayPort on each card. i'm using both DVIs and the HDMI, and ignoring the DisplayPort.

I wonder if I could get away with plugging one into my DVI, one into my HDMi, and one into my Display port and have 3 displays work, as the card says it supports 3 monitors. Do you think that would work? Certainly save me 300 dollars not buying 3 Displayport to DVI adaptors and the hub.

if you have the stuff on hand, it doesn't hurt at all to try it. I have some cheap eBay DisplayPort-to-DVI adaptors and for me they don't work (when trying to run DP as the 4th output on a card). if you have a proper DP connection method, then give it a whirl.

but again - depends on what level of graphics quality and capability you're after. if it's just Windows stuff then it'll work very well, but if it's more intensive then it's too low-end.

Mmm. I don't have an HDMI to DVI, nor were the monitors Displayport. So I'd have to buy at least one of the Displayport to DVIs, and I guess for all the more it is it would not hurt to just buy a HDMI to DVI, as it's not like it'll go bad or anything. If it works, I don't have to buy a 100 dollar hub, if not, oh well.

Yeah eBay is a wicked source for various cables - cheap and good options, as long as you don't mind waiting for them to arrive. I think I only paid $5 or to for the DisplayPort-to-DVI adapters... Which might explain why they don't work! :p
