Does R9 290 need active display adapter?

not if you are running 3 monitors with the same refresh rate and the maximum resolution is supported by HDMI. the HDMI and both DVI-DL ports can be used at the same time on the 290/290x, unlike older cards where you could only use 2 of them.

Doesn't work for me - Windows 7 recognizes the 3rd display but it stays black even when in an Eyefinity display group. I can't extend the desktop to it either. I am using the 2x DVI and 1x HDMI ports because I do not have an adapter for the Display Port. XFX card, but reference layout.
