I want to change from an amd 6100 cpu, to an intel i5, or maybe i7. If i changed i know i would have to change my motherboard, but will i have to buy windows 8 again?

Solution

It sounds like its an OEM system builders version and can be transferred.

I am sorry your wrong. If the OP bought a OEM copy like buying a normal copy 'Off the Shelf" yes your right. BUT the 90% of people posting the questions are regular consumers whom bout a 'System off the shelf' (i.e. a Dell, Gateway, etc.). These OEM Windows versions are tied ONLY to the THAT model / maker computer (i.e. Drive inside a Dell XPS 1234 with Windows installed will ONLY boot once it determines the CPU, MObo, and BIOS are from Dell XPS 1234).

License Transfers*
OEM Software may NOT be transferred to another machine. Even if the original laptop, PC or Server is no longer in use, or if the software is removed from the original hardware, OEM licenses are tied to the device on which the software is first installed.

Thats is true of windows 7 and older . But the OEM system builder versions of windows 8 can be transferred.
"Windows 8 System Builder Product--Personal Use License

Can I transfer the software to another computer or user? You may transfer the software to another computer that belongs to you. You may also transfer the software (together with the license) to a computer owned by someone else if a) you are the first licensed user of the software and b) the new user agrees to the terms of this agreement. To make that transfer, you must transfer the original media, the certificate of authenticity, the product key and the proof of purchase directly to that other person, without retaining any copies of the software. You may use the backup copy we allow you to make or the media that the software came on to transfer the software. Anytime you transfer the software to a new computer, you must remove the software from the prior computer. You may not transfer the software to share licenses between computers. You may transfer Get Genuine Windows software, Pro Pack or Media Center Pack software only together with the licensed computer. "

OKAY STOP. Please go back to what I said, the OP did not state they 'built' the original computer (i.e. bought 'off the shelf' the System Builder Product, nor Windows Home, nor Windows XYZ and installed it himself). The OP is indicating it came PRE-Installed, which is a OEM from Dell, Gateway, etc. that the 'old' computer was made by. That means the OEM Edition is not transferable, period.

PLEASE Let us not confuse the OP with a 'techie builder' answer and the normal 'grandma/average Joe Consumer' answer.

Windows will ask to activate itself. It will get quite testy if you don't. All you have to do is say 'yes' when it asks.
If for some reason you want to manually activate it, go to Control Panel -> System, and at the bottom is the section for Windows Activation. Click on the "Activate Windows" link. Note that if Windows is already activated, there won't be a link, it will just say 'Windows is activated.'

Im not seeing where the OP said it came with the system. I guess I assumed when he said "will i have to buy windows 8 again" that he bought it once already. I guess we should ask and get this cleared up.

Samuel, is the system you are upgrading a pre-built(dell, hp, etc) that came with windows 8 pre-installed?

Did it come with a sticker with the windows key on it? (usually on the back)

If so, it's probably OEM.

Yeah when i still have the sticker on the side, and a cd inside a windows 8 box with the rest of the sticker on. When i first got my computer, i also had to activate windows, by using the code on the sticker. Does that mean i won't need to buy it again?
