I installed a new 1t WDC HDD for my friend's computer because her old one was going out, but it's not showing up when i click on computer to check on it. I know the computer is reading it because it shows up under device manager. I also made sure that it had the right drivers and that it was working properly. I have no idea what to try next, do i have to format it somehow for it to show up under computer? or do i need to run a test of some sort?

You're looking at Device Manger, not Disk Management.
Yes, it needs to be formatted and assigned a drive letter. If this is Windows 7 get to the Disk Management console by right-clicking Computer, selecting Manage and selecting Disk Management from the pane on the left side. In the console, you should see the drive. It it's unformatted run the wizard to create a new partition (right-click > new partition)

It gives me: update, uninstall, disable, properties, and scan for hardware change.
