Hey all, im hoping to get some help for a first time cpu buyer. Ive only ever purchased and installed ram and video cards. CPUs are lost on me so hopefully you can help me out.

So this is my current computer:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00607960&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=1843642

At the moment im trying to squeeze more life into this PC. It currently has 3gb of ram (1gb arriving in a few days) and a nvidia gtx 650. Only thing i feel im missing in games is the cpu. So i thought id upgrade it but i have no idea where to even start.

I googled around a bit and stumbled upon a post that said any socket 939 cpu processor will fit in my motherboard. I have no idea if i understood that wrong or do i just need to find a socket 939 cpu thats faster than my dual core cpu?

I noticed on the website that it said "supports the following processors" and "AMD Athlon 64 X2 up to 4800+" was mentioned out of a list of three. Im assuming thats the fastest of the 3. Does that mean i can only use cpus from that list?

Im completely lost when it comes to cpu so if you can help me out it would be much appreciated. I have no idea what determines what cpu i can upgrade with. Some listings on amazon or ebay dont even list what socket they use so i have no idea how to tell what cpu is for me.

If you like feel free to link me a possible upgrade? I searched anthlon 64 x2 4800+ on ebay and found one 2.5ghz for like 13 bucks.. have no clue if its even worth it or not?

Thanks for the help in advance! Im hoping i get the hang of cpu shopping from this.

Yes i know its old etc etc, im still interested.

good for them, doesnt change my questions though

This is a very old motherboard as you know upgrading i will admit is pointless as youll see a very little jump

to answer your question about this board

it indicates that the motherboard will only accept up to athlon 64x2 4800 plus thats the max processor. no others after that

what do you do on your pc i could write a budget build its fairly easy to build a pc these days i can leave tutorials as well pm me for questions if you have any pc questions

Much thanks i didnt think it would be that low of a jump. Ive seen some guides on how to make PC's so maybe when i get my xmas bonus ill check it out. Thanks for the offer though and clearing things up for me!

No problem if you need help just pm me

this is a cheap rig you can use your gtx 650 which isnt very powerful for gaming but with this set up should give you better frames

So id just have to order those parts and put them together and ill have a pc thats not high end but enough for my graphics card?

no it beyond your old machine the jump would be quite staggering not a exageration as your tech is very old
fx 6300 would be a higher jump if you can afford it go for it your card would be your gaming bottleneck instead of the cpu

psu will support following cards mantle supported cards below
7790
http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-HD-7790-vs-GeForce-GTX-650

7850 wouldnt go past this card due to psu wouldnt cope very well

either of these processor will kick your old processor in the teeth.

also noted back up the files you wanna keep on your old harddrive as the os will wipe the hd clean

also you can use your old harddrive 250 sata as extra storage. inside your new rig
