Hi, I recently built my first computer. It was ~$2000, built for gaming. its specs are
Processor: i5 4670k Haswell
Video Card: MSI r9 290x 4gb
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
PSU: CORSAIR HX Series HX850 850W
MB: MSI Z87-G45 Gaming LGA 1150 Intel Z87 6gb
DVD burner: LITE-ON DVD Burner
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3
OS: Windows 8.1
SSD: SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series 256gb
HDD: TOSHIBA PH3300U-1I72 3TB
Case: Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower
It runs very well, but after being on for a little while something strange happens. It becomes unbearably slow, to the point of crashing the internet when clicking on something. So I checked my task manager and evidently my computer was using 99% of its 16gb of RAM, and 99% of the SSD. I went over the processes and the largest user of memory was my antivirus program... which used around 60 megabytes... nothing came even close to using 16gb of RAM, even all my programs added together only resulted in around 1 gb. What's happening? Is there any way to fix this? Also, if I restart my computer it starts to work perfectly again.

Solution
It is probably downloading and installing loads of MS critical updates, compiling background assemblies for .net, and loads of other start up tasks. Give it some time to settle down.
If you have an up to date anti-virus on a new system. You don't have a problem. Just give it some time.
When I re-installed my Win 7 the other day there was about 300 critical updates that needed to be downloaded and installed. It literally took all day long.

I built my computer almost a week ago now... are there really that many updates?

No, there aren't a week's worth.
As long as your anti-virus is up to date, I wouldn't panic.
You will have to dig around in the task manager and the resource monitor to track down what applications are hogging the resources. At that point it may just be a question of configuring apps a little differently, or uninstalling something that isn't playing well with everyone else.
