Clock speed VS CPU's Generation

Is it correct to assume that a i3 computer running 3.4GHz 3MB Cache is FASTER than Intel Core i5, 3.1GHz ? Meaning, can I correctly value clock speed over the generation.

Also, what does "xxMB SmartCache" mean?

IF they are in the same generation, then yes, but only in single core performance. The i5 is still a quad core whereas the i3 is still a dual core so the i5 is likely faster overall.

Here is a great example. The i3 4340 vs the i5 4430

i3 4340 = 3.6ghz x2 with hyperthreading
i5 4430 = 3.0ghz x4 with 3.2ghz turbo

The i3 is considerably faster in single core performance, but loses out overall to the i5 due to the i5 having twice the cores.

Uhm nom the i3 is dual core where as the i5 is quad.

Though if it was an say an i5 3xxx @ 3.4 vs an i5 4xxx @ 3.1, the 3xxx would be just a bit faster. Though you won't really feel the difference.

The 3xxx to 4xxx performance jump was only about 5 to 10%.

don't be bothered by single core performance, the i5 will beat out the i3 in any event

But you cannot compare numbers directly between one generation to another, and especially not AMD vs Intel.

The 4th gen i5 4430 (3.0ghz, 3.2ghz turbo) is 6-8% faster than the 3rd gen i5 3330 (3.0ghz, 3.2ghz turbo)
