AMD FX-8320 overheating

I just got the FX 8320 2 days ago and thought it performed really well but after playing a few games I realized the CPU fan wasn't getting very loud. So today I tried to see if it was actually getting hot or not so I went into my BIOS and used ASUS AI suite II and put my CPU into power saving mode and ran Prime95. After not even 5 minutes my CPU jumped up to 80+ degrees Celsius and shut off. So I scrapped all of the thermal paste off and put some Arctic Silver on it and it still over heats.

PC specs:
CPU: AMD FX-8320
RAM: 8GB unknown brand
Motherboard: ASUS Sabertooth 990fx gen3/r2
Video Card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 Ti
Storage: 750GB Western Digital Caviar Green/ 120GB Intel 520 SSD

It sounds like your doing everything correctly. If it were me I would monitor voltages just to make sure there isn't something wonky going on there.
If that seems normal then its possible that your particular CPU just likes to run hot. If its under warranty you could have it replaced. Or you could just buy a good after market cooler and be done with it.
I'm sure that isn't what you wanted to hear. Personally I would get a replacement. If the CPU is running that hot now, there's no telling how bad it may get in the future.

But it still shouldn't be overheating especially since I have it at 3.8 GHz from stock 4.0 GHz. But I guess I'll have to save up and get a cooler just to use it.

That is odd. Even at 100% load, the stock cooler should be enough to keep the CPU at acceptable temps. I've stress tested different Vishera CPUs with the stock cooler and I've never seen it above 60c.
How much thermal paste did you apply? If too much is used, it can actually do the opposite of what its supposed to do. It can trap in heat.
Its also important that you have good air flow going through your case. The stock cooler needs lots of fresh air to keep things cool. If you have restricted airflow going through your case it can cause problems.
I would be interested in seeing what your CPU fan speed is when your stressing the CPU. Do you have a program that can monitor fan speeds?

I shouldn't have too much thermal paste. I put a pea sized dot in the middle of the CPU. And for my fan speed I used speccy to keep track of my heat and fan speed etc. and when my CPU hit 77 degrees the fan was at 3154 RPM.

Looks like I'm going to return it :( I installed the heatsink that came with my Phenom II and that didn't help either.
